July Newsletter 2011Firstly, a very warm welcome to all the new subscribers to our newsletter. We have had huge numbers signing up over the last couple of months a very positive sign our program is growing and people are interested in learning more about our Marine Debris Removal Program. Recent Clean up trips Total = 923 kilos Dept. of Environment and Resource Management On the 28th May, the Eco Barge and seven volunteers collaborated with DERM to remove marine debris from Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet. Whitehaven Beach is so beautiful and iconic, many tour operators go to this beach every day and it is evident that these operators take very good care of this beach. Although this was the cleanest beach we have ever cleaned within the Whitsunday Islands,we were able to remove 107kgs of light plastics and general marine debris along this beautiful coast. We are delighted to have had this support from DERM, and look forward to fostering a working partnership aimed towards keeping our islands protected from marine debris.
On the 16th of June the Eco Barge and nine volunteers removed a massive 570kgs of marine debris from three islands impacted by marine debris, Rattary, Grumbell and Grassy Islands. On this day we found a dead green sea turtle on Grassy Island. The cause of death was unknown and we reported this to the EPA hot line. Whitsunday Lions Club 21st of June the Eco Barge and nine volunteers removed marine debris from Double Cone Islands and along Bluff Point. We collected a huge 246kgs of marine debris from these areas and also found a dead dugong along the shore line towards Grimston point. Reported to the EPA hot line. After these three trips we counted and sorted the marine debris and entered this into the data collection sheets we supply to Tangaroa Blue Ocean Care Society. Media Eco barge was their feature story on Saturday 18th of June. This was a great way to show what we do on a clean up trip. Please look at this link if you would like to see the program. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i64tzzXk9Po Ben Southall visited the Eco Barge on his tour through the Whitsunday Islands.
